The Rare Breed Trigger Court Update

Is the rare breed trigger legal?

At the beginning of 2022, around January 25, the ATF declared our FRT triggers to be machine guns under the National Firearms Act (NFA), making their production and possession illegal under the NFA and the Gun Control Act. They also seized some of our triggers from customers at the time based on these claims.

However, on July 23, 2024, the situation changed when the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas in the Case Number: 1:23-cv-00369ruled in National Association for Gun Rights, et al. v. Garland that Rare Breed FRT-15s and Wide-Open Triggers (WOTs) are not machine guns under the NFA, and therefore, their possession does not violate federal law. Following this ruling, the ATF was ordered to return all FRTs and FRT components that had been confiscated or seized from manufacturers, distributors, resellers, and individuals. The ATF has started sending notices to owners of Forced Reset Triggers, specifically Rare Breed FRT-15s and Wide-Open Triggers (WOTs), to request the return of those seized. You can find more information about this on the official ATF website.
